
Clunes Booktown Festival: Russia's Soviet Past with Sheila Fitzpatrick
Russia's war in Ukraine makes understanding its Soviet past all the more important. Sheila Fitzpatrick, whose Shortest History of the Soviet Union came out last year, talks with Joy Damousi about the background to the conflict and the issues surrounding developing new perspectives on stories we think we already know. Professor Sheila Fitzpatrick is a Professor at IHSS, ACU, and Distinguished Service Professor Emerita of the University of Chicago. Her most recent books are White Russians, Red Peril: A Cold War History of Migration to Australia (2021, short-listed for Prime Minister’s Prize in Australian History 2022) and The Shortest History of the Soviet Union (2022).
Professor Joy Damousi is an Australian historian and Professor and Director of the Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences at ACU. Author of at least half a dozen books and recipient of numerous awards, she was President of the Australian Academy of the Humanities from 2017 to 2020.
